Odoo POS is a strong Heartland Restaurant alternative for businesses that want ordering, purchasing, inventory, and accounting connected in one ERP system. Heartland, now part of Global Payments’ Genius restaurant portfolio, supports table service, kitchen management, online ordering, and integrated payments. Odoo extends restaurant transactions into supplier purchasing, warehouse operations, and financial accounting.
For an existing Heartland merchant, moving to Odoo requires identifying whether the restaurant uses Genius Classic or NextGen, preserving menu and kitchen settings, reconciling guest balances, and changing payment equipment where necessary.
Odoo POS vs Heartland Restaurant: Key Differences
| Capability | Odoo POS | Heartland Restaurant / Genius |
| Platform | Restaurant POS inside Odoo ERP | Global Payments restaurant POS |
| Tables and checks | Floor plans, transfers, split bills, tips | Rooms, tables, open checks, split payments |
| Menus | Products, categories, options, pricelists | Items, groups, sizes, modifiers, half-and-half pizza |
| Kitchen | Preparation displays, printers, courses | KDS, kitchen groups, timed holds |
| Online ordering | Website, self-ordering, UrbanPiper connector | Hosted ordering, guest app, QR orders |
| Fulfillment | Configured pickup and ordering workflows | Order Balancing, scheduled pickup and delivery |
| Inventory | Warehouses, receipts, transfers; recipe consumption configured separately | POS ingredient settings and inventory integrations |
| Purchasing | Supplier orders, receiving, vendor bills | Connected back-office applications |
| Accounting | General ledger, journals, payables, reconciliation | POS financial reports and external accounting connections |
| Employees | Employees, Attendances, Planning | Scheduling, timekeeping, tip functions |
| Customers | Loyalty, gift cards, CRM | Guest accounts, loyalty, gift cards, waitlists |
| Locations | POS configurations, warehouses, multi-company | Central administration and location reports |
| Payments | Supported processors and terminals | Global Payments and supported gateways/devices |
| Pricing | Published Odoo user subscriptions | $89/month starting offer; conditional $0 Genius promotion |
The distinction is business-process coverage. Odoo can carry a transaction from a supplier purchase order through stock receiving and restaurant sales to the general ledger, with the relevant applications configured.
Is Heartland Restaurant POS Now Called Genius?
Heartland’s restaurant POS is now marketed within Global Payments’ Genius for Restaurants portfolio. The names found in an existing contract, support portal, or app may still refer to Heartland Restaurant.
Two current product lines matter:
| Product | What restaurants need to know |
| Genius Classic | Established iOS restaurant POS, with version-specific menu and payment functions |
| Genius NextGen | Newer Android-based restaurant POS with different devices and release notes |
Heartland Retail is a separate product. Its exports, inventory controls, and merchant guides should not be used as evidence for Heartland Restaurant.
Global Payments publishes separate Genius Classic release notes and Genius NextGen updates. A name change does not mean that every merchant has moved to NextGen. Version, gateway, hardware, and permissions should be identified before planning a migration.
Heartland Restaurant vs Odoo: Restaurant and ERP Operations
Tableside Ordering, Bar Tabs, and Payments
Heartland supports rooms and tables, open checks, transfers, split payments, tips, and staff permissions. Eligible setups also support card preauthorization and incremental adjustments for bar tabs.
Odoo POS provides floor plans, merged tables, transferred orders, split bills, tips, and course management. Product and price settings can differ between POS configurations.
Consider a group with a dining room and a busy bar. Staff may open a tab, add drinks throughout the evening, transfer an item to another check, and settle the balance with a tip. The migration must preserve the expected order and payment behavior:
- Open checks: Transfers, held tickets, and partial payments.
- Preauthorizations: Card authorization, adjustments, capture, and settlement.
- Staff controls: Permissions to void items, adjust bills, and close shifts.
An Odoo open order is not automatically the same as a card-preauthorized Heartland bar tab. Authorization depends on the selected processor and terminal. Once configured, Odoo can connect restaurant tenders with accounting journals and payment-clearing accounts.
Menu Modifiers, Pizza Options, and Kitchen Routing
Heartland uses items, sections, groups, sizes, modifiers, ingredients, and attributes to configure its restaurant menus. Its half-and-half modifier controls allow whole-pizza and left/right toppings to appear in appropriate sections of a kitchen ticket.
Heartland also supports kitchen groups, printers, displays, and timed item holds. A timed hold can delay sending a course to the kitchen; the restaurant’s actual hold and release rules are part of service operations.
Odoo uses configurable products, choices, pricelists, preparation displays, printers, and courses. It can send food and drinks to different stations and organize what the kitchen prepares next.
A pizza with mushrooms on the left, pepperoni on the right, and cheese across the whole pie needs accurate price calculation and clear preparation instructions. Standard Odoo should not be assumed to reproduce every Heartland half-and-half or timed-hold rule without configuration.
During migration, compare default ingredients, substitutions, size pricing, kitchen groups, and order amendments against the existing register. Test complex menu combinations rather than accepting a successful product import as proof of service readiness.
Online Ordering, QR Tables, and Pickup Timing
Heartland offers hosted online ordering, table QR ordering, scheduled orders, delivery menus, and guest-app functions. Its Scan to Order setup can associate a scanned code with a specific room and table.
Heartland’s Order Balancing can adjust available pickup times based on configured kitchen capacity. This helps restaurants avoid promising simultaneous fulfillment when the kitchen is already handling more orders than its assigned interval allows.
Odoo supports website orders, self-ordering, and restaurant preparation workflows. Its UrbanPiper connector connects supported delivery platforms, including U.S. marketplace accounts, to eligible Odoo POS configurations.
Live UrbanPiper use requires Odoo Enterprise 18.0 or later, an UrbanPiper subscription, and accounts with the relevant marketplaces. UrbanPiper does not directly support combo products. Odoo documents attributes and variants as a possible workaround, but these must be tested for each restaurant menu.
UrbanPiper does not automatically replace Heartland’s kitchen-capacity scheduling. If a restaurant relies on Order Balancing, the intended Odoo process must manage promised times, kitchen queues, and channel-specific availability.
Ingredients, Recipe Costing, and Inventory Locations
Heartland’s menu ingredient records define choices and kitchen behavior. They are not, by themselves, evidence of a complete warehouse or recipe-based stock system.
Restaurants may connect Heartland to specialized back-office products, including MarketMan or ORCA Inventory. A documented MarketMan integration supports restaurant inventory and ingredient-management workflows. Its records may include recipe quantities, ingredient usage, waste, and purchasing that are not contained in the POS menu export.
Odoo Inventory supports receipts, internal transfers, storage locations, adjustments, and replenishment. For example, a commissary receiving 200 pounds of chicken can record its receipt, transfer 70 pounds to one restaurant and 80 to another, and keep 50 pounds centrally.
Standard Odoo POS does not automatically deduct each raw ingredient when a prepared meal sells. Ingredient-level depletion needs a configured production or consumption workflow, possibly supported by an extension or integration.
Migrating a working restaurant inventory setup means preserving recipes, units of measure, preparation yields, and waste, not simply copying on-screen toppings. Reliable restaurant menu costing also depends on supplier prices and physical counts.
Purchasing, Vendor Bills, and Financial Controls
Heartland merchants can use external inventory or accounting applications for supplier purchasing, invoice processing, and bookkeeping. The existing integration landscape must be identified before replacing those processes.
Odoo Purchase supports vendor records, purchase orders, replenishment, and order terms. Inventory records receipts, while Odoo Accounting handles vendor bills, journals, taxes, and payment reconciliation.
Suppose a branch orders 45 cases of produce but receives only 41. Odoo can retain the original order and actual receipt for review against the vendor bill. The recorded stock can then move from the central warehouse to restaurants or a catering division.
For a group that also sells packaged food wholesale, these purchasing and finance processes can serve more than the restaurant. Accounting controls, stock valuation, and legal-entity boundaries still need an appropriate implementation.
Financial Reporting, Labor, and Multi-Location Operations
Heartland’s reports cover sales, tenders, refunds, taxes, discounts, labor, and tips. It also supports timekeeping, permissions, shift functions, guest accounts, gift cards, and loyalty integrations.
A location closing the day must distinguish sales revenue from sales tax, tips owed to employees, refunds, processor fees, and outstanding card deposits. The deposit received several days later may differ from the POS card-sales total.
Odoo can record the relevant accounting and payment-clearing entries alongside sales and purchasing transactions. Odoo Employees, Attendances, and Planning add operational staffing functions, although specialized U.S. payroll and tip-compliance services may still be needed.
For companies with shared suppliers, a commissary, and several outlets, Odoo ERP for restaurants can coordinate stock transfers, sales, and financial records. Separate legal entities may need Odoo Custom and configured multi-company accounting rather than treating each restaurant’s sales department as a separate company.
Heartland Restaurant POS vs Odoo POS Pricing
Heartland Software and Processing Rates
Heartland’s restaurant POS pricing advertises plans starting at $89 per month. The cost of additional stations, payment hardware, kitchen displays, and integrated services depends on the merchant quote.
The main Heartland pricing page lists Payments+ from 2.6% plus 10¢ per in-person transaction. It is a published starting processing rate, not a guaranteed price for every merchant or card type.
| Heartland cost | Pricing consideration |
| Restaurant POS | Starting at $89/month |
| Payment processing | Published starting rate; merchant-specific terms |
| Extra stations and hardware | Device quantities and equipment agreements |
| Kitchen and guest products | Selected modules and integrations |
| Installation and support | Deployment and contract terms |
Does Global Payments Offer Genius for $0?
Global Payments advertises a conditional Genius for Restaurants $0 offer with no subscription, setup, hardware, or shipping fees for eligible new merchants.
This is not an unconditional free POS plan. The published requirements include a three-year contract, processing through Genius, a 4% cash-discounting arrangement, at least $250,000 in annual processing volume, and qualifying application and approval. The offer covers up to ten POS stations; processing charges, potential early termination fees, and other restrictions still apply.
The $89 Heartland starting offer and $0 Genius promotion are different commercial arrangements. Neither should be presented as the automatic cost of an existing restaurant’s installation.
Odoo POS Subscription Pricing
| Odoo plan | Published U.S. price | Main condition |
| One App Free | $0 | One eligible application and dependencies |
| Standard | $24.90 promotional; $31.10 regular per user/month | Standard applications |
| Custom | $49 promotional; $61 regular per user/month | Customization, external API, multi-company |
| Light User | From $8.90 | Eligible use, subject to an Odoo quotation |
Standard and Custom amounts reflect annual billing and promotional discounts for eligible initial users for 12 months. Paid plans include standard POS, Inventory, Purchase, and Accounting applications. One App Free does not give unrestricted use of the complete ERP.
The Odoo pricing page excludes separate implementation, processor charges, equipment, and applicable integrations or development.
Which POS Offers Better Long-Term Value?
Odoo offers broader long-term value for restaurants managing sales, suppliers, inventory, and company accounting together. Paid subscriptions give access to standard ERP applications using shared products, vendor records, and financial data.
For a restaurant group operating a commissary, catering services, and several outlets, Odoo can coordinate supplier purchases, receiving, stock transfers, billing, and reconciliation in one configured environment. That can reduce duplicate data entry and separate back-office subscriptions. The investment must still cover hardware, payment processing, licensing, and implementation.
Heartland vs Odoo: Devices, Payment Processing, and Offline Operation
Heartland Restaurant Classic uses supported iOS devices and compatible peripherals. Genius NextGen has a separate Android-oriented device environment. Reusing an existing printer or tablet with Odoo depends on its exact model, operating system, connection method, and Odoo compatibility. Existing payment terminals should not be assumed portable across processors.
Can Genius Accept Cards Offline?
Genius Classic has multiple documented offline payment workflows. Older Monetary and BridgePay instructions describe eligible magnetic-stripe-reader transactions with offline authorization risk.
More recently, Genius Classic 9.109 added store-and-forward support using PayApp on Verifone T650P and T650C devices. Eligible transactions can be stored while disconnected from the internet or processor and sent when service returns. Later declines and setup limits remain merchant risks.
Not every NextGen gateway has the same features. For example, Global Payments’ TSYS Direct setup expressly lists no store-and-forward for that configuration.
Odoo supports certain locally cached POS orders, but integrated payment terminals do not operate offline in its documented standard workflow. Test kitchen printing, order persistence, authorization, and final settlement separately before switching processors or hardware.
When Should a Restaurant Move From Heartland to Odoo?
| Business requirement | Odoo workflow |
| Supplier orders and bills are maintained separately | Purchase, Inventory, Accounting |
| A central kitchen distributes ingredients | Warehouses and internal transfers |
| Catering shares stock with restaurants | Shared products and purchasing |
| Several legal entities need separate books | Multi-company accounting |
| Card deposits require repeated manual reconciliation | POS journals and payment clearing |
| Heartland must remain during an ERP rollout | Evaluate approved integration with Odoo |
Odoo can establish purchasing and accounting processes first, followed by a phased replacement of restaurant ordering once menus, kitchen operations, payments, and guest programs have been tested.

How to Migrate From Heartland Restaurant to Odoo POS
Migration records may be distributed across the Genius Admin Portal, menu settings, reports, guest programs, payment gateways, and specialized inventory or accounting products. Heartland Retail export instructions are not valid substitutes for Heartland Restaurant procedures.
1. Identify Genius Version and Connected Services
Confirm Classic or NextGen, application versions, locations, devices, payment processors, online ordering, kitchen displays, and connected services.
Record existing bar-tab rules, kitchen groups, modifiers, scheduled orders, loyalty, gift cards, and any MarketMan or ORCA Inventory integrations. Review equipment ownership, merchant contracts, pending payments, and outstanding customer obligations.
2. Export Menu Data From Restaurant Admin Tools
Heartland Restaurant’s Tools → Import/Export workflow supports spreadsheet exports of menu components. Documented records include items, sections, groups, sizes, modifiers, ingredients, context items, and other supported menu configuration objects.
Global Payments’ menu-translation documentation identifies menu components available through Import/Export. Genius Classic 9.109 notes confirm a fix for truncated modifier records when exporting ingredients and modifiers, not the introduction of ingredient exports.
| Heartland data | Odoo configuration |
| Items, groups, sections | Products and POS categories |
| Sizes, modifiers, ingredients | Choices, substitutions, price adjustments |
| Context items and attributes | Conditional ordering rules |
| Kitchen groups, display settings | Printers, preparation stations |
| Taxes and discounts | POS and accounting treatments |
| Location-level settings | Pricelists, availability, permissions |
Check the exported columns and actual relationships. A modifier spreadsheet alone may not recreate all default ingredients, kitchen routing, or location-specific overrides.
3. Export Rooms, Staff, and QR Ordering Details
Heartland’s documented room and staff exports generate .xlsx files with identifiers, names, location references, and deleted-record flags. These records support table-layout and employee mapping, but do not necessarily include every permission, time punch, or payroll record.
Inventory table-specific QR codes and guest-ordering URLs separately. Existing Heartland QR links should not be reused for Odoo without mapping them to the new ordering destination.
4. Preserve Financial Reports and Guest Balances
Heartland’s Gift, Account Balances, and Loyalty reports support CSV and PDF exports. Other restaurant reports cover sales, taxes, tenders, discounts, employee activity, and payment summaries.
A CSV or PDF report is not a full database export. Confirm which customer, check, gift-card, and transaction records can be accessed in structured form, and retain source reports for financial history.
Reconcile gift balances, customer-account obligations, prepaid orders, open tabs, refunds, tips, and pending processor batches separately. Historical Heartland tickets do not automatically become native Odoo POS sessions.
5. Configure Odoo Inventory, Accounting, and Restaurant Service
If the restaurant uses MarketMan or another back-office product, obtain ingredient quantities, supplier invoices, recipes, purchasing history, and stock details from the authorized system. Heartland’s menu ingredient export is not proof of a complete ingredient-stock ledger.
Take physical opening stock counts and confirm supplier units, valuation, and any recipe-consumption requirements.
A phased Odoo implementation should configure menu choices, kitchen routing, table plans, payment methods, taxes, warehouses, supplier purchasing, vendor bills, and accounting journals.
6. Test, Reconcile, and Cut Over
Test a complicated pizza order with half-and-half toppings, a timed kitchen hold, split payment, tip, and refund. Verify online and QR ordering, including UrbanPiper combo behavior if marketplaces are connected.
Reconcile final Heartland sales, gift liabilities, deposits, open orders, and inventory before changing the live POS. During parallel operation, specify which system owns each sale and payment to prevent duplicate entries.
Complete staff training, device testing, offline recovery checks, and day-end reconciliation before deactivating the old environment. Preserve historical exports and reports under applicable retention requirements.
